LEGAL MARRIAGE REQUIREMENTS

GETTING MARRIED IN IRELAND

This is a two step approach – firstly the legal aspect with the State registrar and then the ceremony and celebration with your family and friends.

STEP 1 - GETTING LEGALLY MARRIED

Contact your local Births, Deaths & Marriages registrar (in Ireland, this is a division of the HSE: www.hse.ie/go/marriage) to arrange an appointment to complete your marriage NOTICE OF INTENT. This must be done a minimum of 3 months prior to your preferred wedding date. They will assign you a registrar of their choice and a date and time (10am - 4pm Monday - Friday & it must be held in their venue - though some may offer outside venue/hours for an additional fee).

Present at the registry office on the assigned date and time along with your two witnesses. This is when you will carry out the LEGAL SIGNING OF YOUR MARRIAGE and you are then legally married under Irish law.

STEP 2 - THE CEREMONY, THE CELEBRATION – YOUR DAY,YOUR WAY

More and more couples like you want an additional unique bespoke ceremony that is not restricted by the requirements and constraints of Church or State to fully reflect your personality and preferences.

As an accredited celebrant with the Irish Institute of Celebrants, I currently cannot legally marry you. But, as an independent celebrant, I can:

  • Perform your ceremony at any time or day of the week – i.e it doesn’t have to fit into weekday office hours.
  • Perform your ceremony in any venue of your choice – i.e. no HSE building approval criteria required.
  • Perform your ceremony outdoors - Edge of a cliff! Top of a hill! - ie no requirements for wheelchair access etc (But, of course, with our unpredictable Irish weather, you must have a plan B!)
  • Offer total flexibility in relation to your ceremony structure, sentiment, vows and wording. For instance, you can include God or have no mention of God, you can have a ceremony that is spiritual or non-spiritual, humorous or traditional – i.e no compulsory insertions or restrictions apply to your ceremony.
  • Offer you a celebration that fully reflects both of your unique personalities and preferences.
  • Incorporate a symbolic ritual (or two) of your choice to symbolise your love for each other. This is a great way of personalising your wedding day – see examples HERE - ie there are no restrictions here (as long as it’s legal of course!)
